So finally Mike Nolan appointed J.T Sullivan the opening day starter for the 49ers, replacing the 2005 number one draft pick Alex Smith. 49er fans are for the most part happy about this move as Smith has been called a "bust." I, however, am not.
Look, Smith struggled last year but, and I'm not making excuses, he was hurt. He looked like he was going to continue where 2007 left off leading the 49ers to two wins to open the season (don't even act like you forgot about that two minute drill against Arizona,) when he seperated his shoulder against Seattle. He had his manhood questioned by his coach, Nolan, and he was rushed back, only to find out the seperated shoulder had not healed as thought it would, which would explain the underthrows. He's also suffered from four (yes, that's right, four) offensive coordinaters in four years. That means he has learned four different systems in his first four seasons. How important is a stable system? Well just watch Brett Favre this season.
Sullivan has had a nice pre-season (not great, but not bad) but this is clearly a case of egotism. Mike Nolan's head has gotten in the way of fielding the best team he possibly could, and shaking things up to make it look like he's progressing so he can keep his job in six months, which he probably wont anyways.
Whatever, this franchise has done nothing in a decade... why did I think this season would be any different. Maybe I'll spend the season rooting for Aaron Rodgers and the Packers... I don't know.
